Louie Armstrong, who had one of the most contagious smiles I’ve ever seen, made famous the song which is the title of this post. Written by Larry Shay, Mark Fisher and Joe Goodwin it declared a scientific truth, a smile can change the world.
It’s a universal language that speaks to everyone. It puts at ease both the “smilor” and the “smilee”. Smiling at someone, simply says, “I see you; I acknowledge you; you are important to me.”
When we smile it elevates our mood, lowers our blood pressure, strengthens our immune system, and it makes us better looking (God know some of us can’t get enough of that benefit!) and it’s all free! In today’s economy that sure sounds good to me!!
Unfortunately there are many times when we are too hurried, self absorbed or just plain not feeling good enough to smile. I understand that last part all too well because I am in pain 24/7. But when I don’t smile, as the lyrics of the song say, I just make things worst.
“When you’re smilin’…keep on smilin’…The whole world smiles with you…And when you’re laughin’…keep on laughin’…The sun comes shinin’ through…
But when you’re crying’…you bring on the rain…So stop your frownin’…be happy again…Cause when you’re smilin’…keep on smilin’…The whole world smiles with you.”
