Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts or reverses the meaning of words. It is a word generally associated today with George Orwell’s futuristic, dystopian novel, l984. In it the big brother government , through its Ministry of Truth, engages in doublespeak as a principal means of controlling the people.
Before doublespeak, however, comes doublethink, a term directly taken from Orwell’s 1984. It is to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies in order to get the listener to simultaneously accept two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct. It is mind control.
Classic examples of the technique are phrases such as war is peace and freedom is slavery. These contradictions are most difficult for the mind to process and usually result in confusion first, but ultimately receive full acceptance, especially upon repetition.
Unbeknown to the vast majority of people, these techniques are routinely employed by the mainstream media worldwide and in the US. At times it takes the form of outright lies, such as being told that the US economy is strong and that unemployment is only 8%, when in fact it is 23%. On other occasions, it is classic doublespeak. We are told that the Patriot Act and the National Defense Authorization Act
were necessary to preserve our freedom and protect us from terrorists, when in fact they have stripped away almost entirely our constitutional rights. We are told that Al Qaeda is bad in Iraq and Afghanistan, but good in Libya and Syria where the US is funding their terrorism.
Wake up world! Wake up America! 2012 is 1984!!!
