Many people today claim President Obama isn’t who he represents himself to be.  Sealed records, a fraudulent birth certificate, and a Social Security Number belonging to a dead man in Connecticut.  A conspiracy theory or reality.  What distinguishes the two?  Evidence.

What someone says, and does is evidence of who they are.  As we have noted from the previous two posts the Old Testament God is consistently calling for the punishment or murder of nearly everyone that displeases him.  It is the same God that instituted the bloody animal sacrifice system for almost any occasion and which saw 22,000 cattle and 120,000 goats and sheep slaughtered at the dedication of Solomon’s temple.  According to the record, it is also the same God that brought Noah’s flood to destroy the entire planet.

By contrast the New Testament God aka Jesus says “love your enemies, bless those that curse you.”  “I came not to destroy but to save.”  This God intervened in the stoning death of a woman charged with adultery under Old Testament law by challenging the accusers with “let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” and subsequently assured the terrified woman with the words, “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”  This God was the champion of the poor, the underdog.  He fed them, healed them, and taught them love and forgiveness.  He called out and challenged the corrupt religious and political leaders who were imposing police state tyranny on the people.  They hated him for it and they made of him a living sacrifice for the cause of liberty and freedom.  And after torturing and nailing him to a cross, Roman style, his farewell words to his executioners were ones of forgiveness.

Are the Old Testament and New Testament Gods irreconcilable or are they one and the same as many theologians argue?  Does one have to castrate common sense to harmonize them?

To be continued….
